Justify text. When you justify text, space is added between words so that both edges of each line are aligned with both margins. The last line in the paragraph is aligned left. Click anywhere in the paragraph that you want to justify. Right-click on the text, and click Paragraph. On the Indents and Spacing tab, click the drop-down next to Alignment, and click Justified, OK. Right-click on the text again, and click Format, Font. Center text or align it on the right or left margin, or justify text to adjust the spacing between words in a paragraph so the left and right edges are even. Notes: New Office 365 features are released gradually to Office 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet.

  • Get acquainted with the power of Word 2019 for Mac

    - [Instructor] Well just as we can change the look of a document by formatting the text on our page, we can also apply certain attributes to paragraphs, entire paragraphs. That's going to be the focus in this chapter. We're going to begin with alignment, and we're gonna continue working with our Tech Connect document, 0401 if you're catching up. Notice down the left-hand side that all of our text is what we would call flush with the left margin, a nice straight line all the way down the left. As we look down the right side, you can see it's not so flush. There are different spacings along the right-hand margin to give it a certain look and feel. That's all part of the default alignment, but we can make changes by changing paragraph alignment. We don't need to select an entire paragraph. All we have to do is click anywhere in it. For example, the title would be considered its own paragraph because someone hit return at the end of the line, making it a paragraph. So we'll click anywhere in the title Tech Connect. Next we're gonna go up to the ribbon, making sure the Home tab is still selected. And we'll go to the Paragraph group here, where we see a series of alignment buttons. One of them is already selected. It's this one right here, called Align Left. The next one over, as we hover over it, shows us that's to Center Text. Then we have Right Align and then we have something called Justify, also known as full justification. Let's try Center, that often works for titles. See how the entire title is centered? We didn't have to select it. Let's try it again for the headings down below. Click anywhere in the heading and click Center. Again, we'll click anywhere in the next heading and choose Center. So we're using the same style and formatting but changing up the alignment, and that's a different look, kinda more like a newsletter feel. Of course, we can also make changes to an entire paragraph with multiple lines. Let's go down to the next one starting with Visitors at our Red30 Tech campus. Click anywhere in that paragraph, and this might look good centered. We give it a click and realize, no, it doesn't make sense. What about Right Align? Certainly doesn't make sense but you can see how everything is flush down the right margin. We used this earlier creating our memorandum, where we wanted the date on the right margin and everything to move in from that right margin, making it right align. This one, though, might make sense, Justify, or full justification, give that a click. You can see how it's going to create a nice flush feeling down the left-hand side and the right-hand side for every line except the last line in a paragraph. It does that by creating extra spaces in between some of the words. Wouldn't make sense on the last line, it would be too spread out. So we go down to the next paragraph, click in there, and click Justify, we get that same feel. And of course, we can select multiple paragraphs and apply that same change. Let's click from During and drag, so right from the D in During the Give-a-Thon, all the way down to the end of our page, right after that web address. We'll go up to Justify, give it a click. Click in the background to deselect and you can see how it's nice and clean down the left and the right-hand sides to give us a totally different look and feel. With those selections I think we should go back to our title and headings and make all of them left-aligned. Of course, we can select all three. Click and drag from the T in Tech Connect to the end of the D in world, and we'll go back to Left Align, click in the background, and that's how you change alignment for entire paragraphs in your document here in Word 2019.

When text is 'justified' it is arranged so that each linebegins, or ends, right under the other, creating an even, verticaledge to a block of text. Text is almost always left justified. Thatmeans that each line of text begins the same distance in from theleft edge. Text can be right justified as well. Then the amount ofspace between words, and even between letters, is adjusted toensure that each line of text also ends the same distance in fromthe right edge.
The wordjustify comes from the world of typesetting.
In left-to-right-reading languages, the vertical margin on the leftgives a reader's eye the clue as to where to begin reading the nextline.
The right margin can be ragged right or rightjustified.
Ragged right margins are built by the ends of linesterminating with the end of a word or a hyphen, usually within afew characters of the line-ending above it and below it.
Right justified margins are 'forced' into alignment, so thatthe right margin, too, is a vertical margin.
Most right-justified margins produced by editors inexperienced intypesetting standards can result in lines of text that areunaesthetically pleasing and are, in fact, hard for the reader'seye to follow. These forced lines of text can contain too fewcharacters or too many characters, because the software apparentlymakes the decisions about how to honour spaces between words,punctuation and hyphens.
Finally, right-justified margins, such as those you can find inpublished books, are seen when the editor chooses a proportionalspacing type font -- the 'm' character takes up more spacehorizontally than the 'i' character -- and spaces the lines of textfar enough apart from each other -- spacing or leading -- sothat the reader's eye can 'find' the next line.

If you have both an iPhone and a Mac, Apple makes this possible. You need both — there’s no way to do this with an iPhone and a Windows PC. The built-in SMS-message-sending feature on a Mac only works if you partner it with an iPhone, too — not if you have an Android phone.

This is part of the “Continuity” feature added in Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Google Voice gives you a new phone number, which you could use as your primary phone number if you like — although it’s unclear how long Google Voice will continue to be a service supported by Google.

Sign into the Google Voice website and you can send and receive text messages at that phone number. You can also have calls and text messages sent to that phone number be automatically forwarded to your primary phone number.

Sending text messages and placing phone calls to numbers in the US and Canada is completely free with Google Voice. You’ll have to pay Google to send text messages elsewhere.

Skype

Skype offers the ability to send text messages from the Skype desktop app. Unlike Google Voice, this is available worldwide. However, Microsoft does charge for this service, so you’ll have to pay to send text messages from Skype.

Many cellular carriers offer email-to-SMS gateways you can use. Send an email to the phone number at this gateway and it will be delivered to the address. You will need to know the carrier associated with the phone number to send an SMS message in this way.

For example, let’s say a person’s phone number is 1-123-456-7890 and that’s a T-Mobile phone number. You could send an an email to 11234567890@tmomail.net. Search for “email to SMS gateways” to find lists of gateways for different cellular service providers. For example, this email-to-SMS gateway list includes different email address for many different cellular carriers around the world.

Be sure to keep your message short — under 160 characters.

Where It Excels

LibreOffice's biggest advantage, of course, is that it's completely free. While lots of office suites like Microsoft Office are advanced, they also cost a lot of money. Where It Falls Short

LibreOffice is slow. I mean really slow. Starting it up for the first time on my laptop (which, for what it's worth, has a super fast SSD in it) still takes a good 20 seconds. Once you get into it, it isn't so bad, but that startup time can be pretty annoying. The interface also isn't the prettiest, and the menus can be a bit more confusing at times, especially if you delve into its deeper options (though the options inside are plentiful). Writer also doesn't have some of the smaller, more convenient features that Word has, like a word counter at the bottom of the window, which can throw some people off who are more advanced word processors.

The Competition

Microsoft Word is the most obvious competitor to LibreOffice. As I said above, Word is a bit more polished and has a few smaller features that, if you've become reliant on them, will throw you off in LibreOffice. If all you're doing is word processing (that is, you don't use spreadsheets or create presentations) Microsoft Office isn't really worth the $120 price tag—but if you have the money to blow and you just need those Word-specific features, Word is obviously where you'll have to get them. In addition, if you are a student (or somehow have access to student discounts), you can get it for a lot cheaper, where it becomes much more worth the cost. WordPad is a simple word processor that comes free with Windows. It solves LibreOffice's biggest problem—slowness—since it's so lightweight and fast. However, that light weight comes at a big price in features. WordPad is extremely simple, almost to the point where I'm hesitant to call it a word processor. It can do basic text editing and formatting, but if you're looking to add a header to your pages, use a template, or even check your spelling, WordPad won't be able to help you. If you need something quick and simple, though, WordPad is a great alternative.

Google Docs is also a bit simpler than most people might like, but it has some incredible collaboration features that make it perfect for working with other people on a document. Plus, you can access your documents from anywhere, no Dropbox-like file syncing program required, which is fantastic if you jump from computer to computer.

Lastly, if you're looking for a distraction-free writing tool, the free Q10 does a good job of making you focus without skimping on word processing features. It's more geared toward writers, so it has the advanced features they'd want—like word counts, page counts, a spell checker, an alarm, and stuff like that—but it doesn't have a lot of the extra formatting tools you'll find in a normal word processor. This is our 'left field' pick for word processor, since it isn't a word processor in the strictly traditional sense—but it's worth a look if that's what you're using word processors for.

The PDF (Portable Document Format) is the open standard, created by Adobe in the 1990s, for presenting documents so they look consistent across all platforms and software. DOC (or DOCX) is the format/file extension used mainly by Microsoft Office for its word processing documents. The two aren't anywhere near compatible.

The problem is that you can't open a DOC file with Adobe Reader (or any other free PDF reader like FoxIt and Sumatra). But in order to convert PDFs to Word format—which really just means editing a a PDF in Word—the related process is easy.

As of Word 2013 (released in 2012), Microsoft has offered a function called PDF Reflow. It does what you expect. In Word, you go to the File tab, select open, select any PDF File, and open it right up for editing, as if it was a Word DOCX file.

There are limitations, however. The PDF you open in Word will have all the content, but it probably won't look exactly right. That's because PDFs are 'fixed'—while the data is there, the file doesn't store the relationship between the data (such as the position on the page). Word documents are all about exacting that placement.

Here's a list from Microsoft of exactly what may not convert just right:

  • Tables with cell spacing
  • Page colors and page borders
  • Tracked changes
  • Frames
  • Footnotes that span more than one page
  • Endnotes
  • Audio, video, and PDF active elements
  • PDF bookmarks
  • PDF tags
  • PDF comments
  • Font effects, like Glow or Shadow (in the Word file, the effects are represented by graphics)

When you open a PDF in Word, you'll get this warning:

'Word will now convert your PDF to an editable Word document,' it says. 'This may take a while. The resulting Word document will be optimized to allow you to edit the text, so it might not look exactly like the original PDF, especially if the original file contained a lot of graphics.'

That said, the graphics get pulled in; they are easily editable as well.

Saving a file from Word 2013 to PDF is as simple as doing a Save as from the File tab. You should check the boxes on the save dialog box that say 'Open File After Publishing' to immediately view it.

Conversion also works in Word Online, found at Office Online. You open a PDF in Word Online and it's viewable, but click the 'Edit in Word' link and you'll see this:

That's followed by another warning about changes to the layout, etc. But the content will be there and editable, even if the look went wonky. Give it a try.

That's it, you're all set for using PDFs in Word. Unless you have an older version of Microsoft Word.

You're out of luck trying to open a PDF directly in Word 2010 or earlier. You'll need to convert the file first.

The ways to do this are numerous. Sites like Nitro's Converter will easily do a one-at-a-time conversion in either direction and email you the result. Of course, Nitro would prefer to sell you some software, which is handy if you've got hundreds or thousands of PDFs that need conversion.

Others include: Word.net, which has similar features; doc2pdf, arguably the best looking site that converts PDFs to Word and back; PDFPro's option to convert up to three PDF files to Word a month; and PDF Converter, which also converts PDF to Excel, PowerPoint, or an image, or vice versa. In fact, you can email any attachment to pdf@freepdfconvert.com and get a PDF.

For desktop software—which is the fastest way to turn a PDF into a Word DOC—there is no lack of options. PDFMate or WPS Office's Converter are great options for Windows users. If you're on a Mac, there are Lighten or iPubsoft, but each only has a free trial, so they're not totally free.

Smallpdf sells a $99 Windows tool called Solid PDF Converter that does a lot more than just Word output, plus handles batch conversions and OCR to make scans into editable text; it also offers a $6 per month service to make unlimited conversions online.

Ultimately, however, Word makes a pretty terrible editor for PDF files. You're going to be much better off finding a full PDF editor, and you don't have to pay the big cost of getting Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.

FoxIt PhantomPDF, for example, is $109; Qoopa'sPDF Studio Standard goes for $89; and CutePDF is just $49.95. They've all got free trials, so if you've got serious PDF editing in your future, give them a try before you settle for Word conversions.

Export a PDF to JPEG or other image format

If you need to convert a PDF into an image file, it's going to be a whole lot easier on a Mac than it would be with a PC. On a Mac, simply open the PDF in Preview. Use the File > Export menu and select the image format you want and the options you prefer, and you've got your image file.

On Windows, the best no-cost method is to open a free Adobe account and log in to https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf. Drag a PDF into the window; from the Convert To: menu, select Image, then Image Format (JPEG, PNG, or TIFF), and use the slider to select the image quality. Multipage PDFs get converted into separate image files. You can then download a ZIP with the image files.

Our favorite is XnViewMP (www.xnview.com), free for personal and educational use. When you open a PDF in XnViewMP, you'll probably need to follow the prompts to install the open-source GhostScript app for working with PDF and PostScript files, but you can then use XnViewMP to export a PDF to any standard image format. Keep in mind that all fonts will be converted from scalable TrueType format into bitmap, and small text will look 'block-y.'

Some employ a tabbed interface, such as Jarte (which is based on the WordPad word processing engine and integrates easily with WordWeb), EditPad Lite (which also has the automatic backup), and Notetab Light (which can also calculate the value of mathematical expressions entered in the program). Jarte, EditPad Lite, and Notetab Light are all only available for Windows. Jarte is also available as a portable program.

Typically, Vi is the default text editor in Linux operating systems and it’s a keyboard intensive program with no graphical user interface (GUI). A good text editor for Windows that has hotkeys available for its 312 text-processing functions, innovative features, and timesaving tools is TED Notepad, which is also available as a portable program. Emacs is also available for both Windows and Linux, and is customizable. It also includes a file compare utility and a file manager. You can also add Org-mode to Emacs, which is a personal information management and outlining tool. If you prefer text editors with GUIs, Vim and gEdit are both good options and are available. GetDiz is a Notepad replacement for Windows that allows you to edit many text files quickly from within Windows Explorer and has enhanced functionality for dealing with DIZ and NFO files. It can also display ASCII art correctly. Programmer’s Text Editors

There are many text editors that provide useful functionality for programmers. Most support syntax highlighting for many programming languages, multiple document editing, and are extendable with plugins. Some also allow editing of remote files through FTP.

Free Text Comparison Tools For Mac

PSPad not only supports syntax highlighting, but also matching bracket highlighting for most popular programming languages. It also has a hex editor, macro recorder, and a differencing tool. PSPad also easily integrates with the free version of the TopStyle CSS editor. Notepad++ also supports bracket highlighting and macro recording. It also supports syntax folding and is highly customizable through plugins using the included plugin manager. Both PSPad and Notepad++ are only available for Windows.

The cross-platform (Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X) editor, jEdit, supports syntax highlighting for over 200 programming languages and auto indent, as well as a differencing utility, an FTP browser, and block selecting. It is also extendable using plugins and macros, and there are hundreds of plugins and macros available through the built-in plugin manager feature.

Programmer’s Notepad for Windows supports syntax highlighting using schemes, both built-in and user-defined, code folding and outlining, a tabbed interface with multi-level split views, and the ability to export to HTML (using CSS) and RTF.

If you like the Vi editor in Linux, but prefer a graphical editor that also serves well as a programmer’s text editor, Editra and Komodo Edit are good options. They both provide Vi emulation, as well as support for syntax highlighting in many programming languages and code folding. Editra has a tabbed interface, allows block (un)commenting and (un)indenting, and is extendable using the built-in plugin downloader/installer. Komodo Edit supports background syntax checking and contains a toolbox with shell command integration, macros, and code snippets. Both Editra and Komodo Edit are available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Other options include the following:

  • Crimson Editor – A very small editor for Windows containing a directory tree view window
  • Geany – A small and fast IDE for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X that supports code folding, code navigation, a build system, and a plugin interface

Microsoft Word Replacements

There are also free programs that act as replacements for Microsoft Word. They can be used as text editors, but they have more formatting features than simple text editors. You can add images and tables, change fonts and color, and insert hyperlinks.

AbiWord runs on Windows and Linux and can read and write OpenOffice.org documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, and HTML web pages. It has advanced document layout options such as tables, bullets, numbered lists, images, styles, footnotes, and endnotes. It even has a Mail Merge utility like Microsoft Word. You can extend AbiWord with a variety of plugins, which can be selected when you install AbiWord. A portable version is also available that you can run from a USB flash drive.

Angel Writer is a small rich text editor for Windows with a high performance rate that allows you to easily create impressive documents.

Minimalist Text Editors

If you get distracted when you write by the plethora of features in text editors and word processors, you might want to try one of the so-called “minimalist” text editors out there. They are “no-frills” editors that either don’t offer any formatting features or many of the other features of modern word processors, and even third-party text editors, or the features are hidden until you want them. Without all the fancy features staring you in the face, you can concentrate on the task of writing. Below is a list of some of the minimalist text editors we found.

  • Dark Room– Available for Windows, requires .NET Framework 2.0, and is available as a portable program.

If you want a simple text editor with the ability to count down from a set word count, try yEdit2 for Windows. If you have to write a certain number of words, yEdit2 can make it easier.

Secure Text Editors

You can also use a text editor as secure place to store private information. There are several text editors that either include encryption as a feature or are specially designed for securely storing text. Notepad++, mentioned in the Programmer’s Text Editors section above, allows you to add encryption functionality using the SecurePad plugin, which is available through the Plugin Manager. SecurePad will encrypt selected text in the current document or the whole document.

Steganos LockNote is a small, simple method for securely storing chunks of information in files. For example, if you purchase a download-only program, you can use LockNote to store the product key or serial number that goes with that program in the same folder, so you always know where to find it.

Novel Writing Editor

There’s even an editor that’s meant for writing novels, called yWriter5, available for Windows and Linux. It breaks your novel into chapters and scenes, helping you to keep track of your work. However, yWriter5 does not suggest plot ideas, character names, or write any part of your novel for you. The creative task of writing is still up to you, yWriter5 just makes it easier.

One more text editor to mention is Nano in Linux, which is an easy-to-use text editor you run directly on the command line. Nano is installed by default in Ubuntu and many other Linux distros, and is easier to learn than Vi or emacs.

There’s something of a misconception when it comes to the Mac. While powerful tools like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro certainly have price tags commensurate with their robust feature sets, many of the greatest Mac apps won’t cost you anything more than the time they take to download them.

A quick note before we begin. Apple has changed its security settings in macOS, so you’ll need to allow your system to open a couple of these apps. A dialogue box may pop up telling you a certain app 'is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?' Click Open to proceed with the installation.

Windows and macOS come pre-installed with a program that can open and edit text files. It's called TextEdit on Macs and Notepad on Windows, but neither are quite as advanced as some of the third-party applications that are available today.

Most of the text editors below need to be downloaded to your computer before you can use them, but all of them provide their own unique set of features that set them apart from the default software programs that come with Windows and Mac.

Why Use a Text Editor?

Ultimately, the best text editor for you depends on your preferences and your project. As someone who does light work with C++ and Java, I don’t need much more than MacVim and gcc in Terminal to get my work done. Text editors serve as note-taking applications at a minimum level to powerful code editors. Notepad in Windows, Text Edit in Mac Os serves the basic purpose of text editing. A text editor lets you open a file as a text document, something that can be useful for a number of reasons:

  • Create a file from scratch using a specific programming language, like an HTML or CSS file for use on a website
  • Edit or build files that end with the TXT, REG, XML, CSV, ASP, BAT, AU3, PHP, AHK, SVG, or JS file extension, among many others
  • View the text version of a file that you don't know the format for
  • Quickly remove formatting like bold, custom font types, URL hyperlinks, etc.

Notepad++ is the best alternative notepad application for Windows computers. It’s really easy to use for basic users who just need a text file opener or editor but also includes some really advanced features for those interested.

This program uses tabbed browsing which means you can open multiple documents at once and they'll display at the top of Notepad++ as tabs. While each tab represents its own file, Notepad++ can interact with all of them at once to do things like compare files for differences and search for or replace text.

Probably the easiest way to edit files with Notepad++ is to right-click the file and choose Edit with Notepad++ from the context menu.

This program can open nearly any file as a text document and supports lots of helpful plugins. It also includes a really handy text search/replace function, highlights syntax automatically, auto-completes words, and is the best offline text file converter.

The Notepad++ Find option lets you search for words with criteria like backward direction, match whole word only, match case, and wrap around.

Also supported is bookmarking, macros, auto-backup, multi-page searching, resumed sessions, read-only mode, encoding conversions, and the ability to search for words on Wikipedia and quickly open the document in your web browser.

Notepad++ also supports plugins to do things like auto-save open documents, merge all the text from open documents into one main file, align programming code, monitor open documents to refresh them as they change, copy and paste more than one item from the clipboard at once, and lots more.

Notepad++ lets you save text documents to a huge variety of formats like TXT, CSS, ASM, AU3, BASH, BAT, HPP, CC, DIFF, HTML, REG, HEX, JAVA, SQL, VBS, and many others.

Notepad++ works with Windows only, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. You can also grab a portable version of Notepad++ from the download page; one is in the ZIP format and the other is a 7Z file.

Brackets is a free text editor that's primarily meant for web designers, but can of course be used by anyone to view or edit a text document.

The interface is extremely clean and modern and feels really easy to use despite all of its advanced settings. In fact, nearly all of the options are hidden away from plain site so that it's easy for anyone to use, which also provides an extremely open UI for editing.

Code writers might like that Brackets highlights syntax, can split the screen to edit more than one document simultaneously, lets you click one No Distractions button for a really simple interface, and supports lots of keyboard shortcuts so that you can quickly indent, duplicate, move between lines, toggle line and block comments, show or hide code hints, and more.

You can quickly change the file type you're working with to instantly change syntax highlighting rules, as well as change the encoding of the file if you need to.

If you're editing a CSS or HTML file, you can enable the Live Preview option to watch the page update in real time in your web browser as you make changes to the file.

Note

The Working Files area is where you can open all of the files that belong to a single project, and quickly move between them without leaving Brackets.

Some examples of plugins you can use in Brackets includes one to support W3C validation, Ungit to make it easier to use Git, an HTML tag menu, and Python tools.

Brackets comes installed with both a dark and a light theme that you can change at any time, but there are dozens of others that you can install through the Extensions Manager.

Brackets is available as a DEB, MSI, and DMG file for use in Linux, Windows, and macOS, respectively.

What We Like

  • Very attractive and modern interface

  • Supports unique features not found in similar text editors

  • Changing the interface setup is easy with one click

  • The tabbed interface is easy to work with

  • Runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows

What We Don't Like

  • It's a bit complex — even with its minimal UI — for people who want just a simple text editor

Komodo Edit is another free text editor with a super clear and minimal design that still manages to pack some awesome features.

Various view modes are included so that you can quickly open or close specific windows. One is “Focus Mode” to hide all of the open windows and just display the editor, and the others show/hide things like folders, the syntax checker results, and notifications.

This program makes it very easy to open text documents even while one is currently open. At the very top of the program is the path to the currently opened file, and you can select the arrow next to any folder to get a list of files, any of which will open as a new tab in Komodo Edit if you select it.

The folder views off to the side of Komodo Edit are also really useful since they let you browse through the file system as well as create virtual projects that link folders and files together to better organize what you need to work on.

A unique feature in Komodo Edit is the area at the upper-left side of the program that lets you not only undo and redo like most programs, but also go back to the previous cursor location, as well as go forward to return to where you just were.

Here are some other Komodo Edit features worth noting:

  • Can connect to a remote FTP server to open and/or save files
  • Supports bookmarking specific areas of the document
  • Lets you switch to a huge number of file types to highlight syntax differently and to save under that format
  • The 'Go to Anything' search box lets you search for files to open, install add-ons, run scripts and commands, open menus, install other languages, change the color scheme, and more
  • Recently closed tabs and files are easy to re-open
  • Lets you preview files in a web browser
  • Templates can be built out of existing files
  • A 'Watch File' option can open a document in a new window for reference withouting being added to the tabbed list of files you're editing
  • Records macros that can be played back to repeat things

Visual Studio Code

What We Like

  • Whole folders can be opened at once to open all of the text files

  • A minimal interface is just one click away

  • Supports tabs for easy file tracking

  • Includes a debugger; perfect for source code editing

What We Don't Like

  • Centered primarily around editing and debugging code, so it could be too much for the average user

  • Settings are difficult to change

Visual Studio Code is a free text editor that's used primarily as a source code editor.

The program is extremely minimal and even has a 'Zen Mode' option one click away that immediately hides all the menus and windows, and maximizes the program to fill the whole screen.

The tabbed browsing interface seen with other text editors is supported in Visual Studio Code as well, which makes it really easy to work with multiple documents at once.

You can also open entire folders of files at once if you're working on a project, and even save the project for easy retrieval later.

However, this text editor probably isn't ideal unless you plan to use it for programming purposes. There are entire sections dedicated to debugging code, viewing command outputs, managing source control providers, and even using a built-in Command Prompt.

The settings are also not as intuitive to adjust since you have to modify them using the text editor; the settings are entirely text-based.

Here are some features you might find useful in this program:

  • You can open whole folders at once from the right-click context menu
  • A 'Change All Occurrences' option makes it easy to select and edit text you want to change throughout the entire document in one sweep
  • Similar is the 'Rename Refactoring' option to change the name of a symbol in every instance of it across all the documents in your project
  • Opening recently closed documents is easy since they're listed in the same place
  • The 'IntelliSense' feature helps to automatically fill in code based on surrounding text and the location of the cursor in the document
  • Files can be auto-saved if you turn the option on
  • A document can quickly be reverted back to the state it was in when you last saved it
  • The editing space can be split into multiple windows for side-by-side reading and editing
  • Dozens of keyboard shortcuts are allowed and fully editable, such as one to copy/paste an entire line of code directly above or below the current position
  • You can change the color theme of the program as well as the theme of icons
  • Extensions can be installed to add more features to Visual Studio Code, such as one to debug JavaScript code in the Chrome browser and another to run programming code directly from the text editor
  • When searching for text strings, you can define whether to match the case and/or the whole word

Copy Text Word For Mac



Being able to copy a text style in macOS is extremely helpful. If you don't copy and paste the text style, you're just copying the text, which means you might end up with different types of styles and formatting in the same email, which doesn't usually look very nice. I DO NOT USE different formats or fonts and the document i am copying from is another Mac Word document. I am trying to get just the text from the other document. I don't know where the line of little squares comes from -- they are not in the document i am trying to copy from.

Mac users leveraging Microsoft Office 365 should be pleasantly surprised to learn they're eligible to begin using Microsoft's new Office 2016 for Mac applications. Numerous innovations are included with Microsoft's newest version of Word for the Mac. Office 365 users can learn more about the new version of Office, and how to download it, in my previous post: 'What's new in Office 2016 for Mac?'

Word 2016 for the Mac includes a new Design tab. The tab aims to make it easier for Mac users to quickly access preconfigured design elements and produce professional appearing documents without having to possess any significant graphics or design expertise. Pre-formatted templates, color combinations, complete themes, and individual fonts all appear on the Design tab.

Smart Lookup provides contextually relevant information for highlighted text, so authors can access additional web-based data. For example, highlighting the word 'Microsoft' within a document, then right-clicking and selecting Smart Lookup, generates a window that reveals Bing search results. In this case, you'll see a company summary, the company's Wikipedia page, and Microsoft's official website all listed within the top search results. The Smart Lookup feature is also available on the Tools menu.

Multiple team members can simultaneously create and edit a single new Word document. When a user working on a file saves any changes, the platform generates a notification that highlights the changes for the other users. There's also support for threaded comments, so collaborators and reviewers can conduct a conversation regarding a document's proposed changes. This innovation makes it easier for authors, editors, and other team members to directly address others' comments during the editing process, thereby eliminating confusion and enhancing collaboration.

Some sharing options were available in previous Word versions, but it's even easier in Word 2016 to share files. Sharing options are found on the File menu.

Mac users now find their OneDrive cloud-based file share listed directly within Word, too. This helps leverage Dropbox and iCloud for storing, backing up, and sharing Word documents. Selecting File and choosing Save As presents several options, depending on the cloud services configured on the Mac. Users wishing to save files to their OneDrive account can select the Online Locations button that appears within the Save As window.

Mail Merge is also improved. The Mailings tab makes it easier to connect Word, Excel, and Outlook to generate and distribute mass mailings. Icon options are included for creating envelopes and labels. Mac users will find additional options for generating mass mailings using Apple Address Book or FileMaker Pro.

A new Styles Pane will appear on the right-hand side of the screen when it's selected, which simplifies the ability to apply styles to text. To select it, simply click the Styles pane icon from the Home tab. Lastly, a new Navigation Pane helps users navigate documents by the type of change (insertion, deletion, etc.), which also aids collaboration between multiple authors. To access the Navigation Pane, click the View tab and select the Navigation Pane checkbox.

Are you tired of pasting text into Word, only to find that the pasted text included colors, formatting, links, and more from its original source? Here’s how you can keep pasted text from messing up your documents.

By default, Word will keep the formatting of text and other content you past into a document, including links, colors, size, font, and more. This can be annoying at best and at worst, can mess up the other formatting in your document.

If you copied a large amount of text or images from a site, or if your internet connection happens to be slow, Word may even freeze temporarily while it’s retrieving and pasting the content. That’s no fun.

Word does have one saving feature: you can click the little popup under pasted text and select Plain Text to get just the text and none of the formatting. However, that’s 2 extra clicks. If you just want to paste the text, and nothing else, you’ll want to change the default setting. Thankfully, it’s easy. If you just pasted text, just click the popup and select Set Default Paste.

Alternately, open the Options pane in Word manually from the File backstage menu or the Office orb in Word 2007.

Select the Advanced tab, then scroll down to the Cut, copy, and paste settings section.

Here you can change a wide variety of pasting options. To switch to pasting text only by default, select Keep Text Only in the drop-down menus. You can change the settings for all options, or just change the ones you wish. We often want to keep the formatting if we’re pasting within the same document, so we left the first option at default, then switched all the others to Keep Text Only.
